CanoeingWhile it seems like it has been years since I have had the opportunity to go canoeing (which it has been), I still miss it dearly.  There is just something about being in nature and traveling at a speed that you have the opportunity to see the world around you.  I know that it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it has always been one of the pastimes that I have enjoyed.

I have had the opportunity to go on a number of canoeing trips including trips up to Missinippi, Stanley Mission, Prince Albert to Gronlid Bridge, and many more.  Most of these trips involved canoeing large distances (around 50 km in a day) with a canoe packed full of gear.  Most of the time these trips were blessed with nice weather, but we had our share of trips that were not.

One of the trips I can remember is canoeing on the South Saskatchewan River in the fall.  We setup camp for the night while it was raining, only to wake up to snow covered ground.

Another trip I liked was the one that we took in May on the South Saskatchewan River.  It was a late melt in the spring of that year, and as we canoed downstream, the shores were lined with chunks of ice taller than I was.  I also loved the trip from Prince Albert where we were able to see the old La Colle Falls Dam as well as a few old wooden train trestles.

I will have to make a point of going out canoeing in 2014 – my paddle has been out of the water for too long.
