While most of us would like to have a life where we work our busy careers, run our home businesses, exercise on a daily basis, have quality time to ourselves and spend time with our family while getting all of our chores done, the truth of the matter is that there are only so many minutes of time in a day. All of our good intentions can be stymied by the fact that it is overwhelming to try and fit all of our needs and wants into a day, and I am sure that many of you are like me and just end up overwhelmed and get nothing done.
I would like to propose that you can make changes in your life if you do it ten minutes at a time.
When I look at ten minutes, I don’t see a long commitment, but rather an opportunity to accomplish something. Maybe it is as simple as sitting down and reading a book, tidying that room that you never have time to touch, or going out for a short walk. It really doesn’t matter how much you get done in those ten minutes – the point is that you are accomplishing something.
In my case, I was pretty good at working on my business, taking care of my health (through exercise) and even getting some chores done around the house when we had three kids. But when baby number four came along, all of a sudden I was too tired to do anything. My exercising stopped, working on the business was usually neglected, and I became a lot less effective in my life.
It wasn’t until this year that I said to myself, “Something needs to change.”
So, taking tasks on ten minutes at a time was born.
I look at it this way: chances are that I can get ten minutes of uninterrupted time in a block where my kids won’t interrupt me so that I can accomplish something. It can be something business related (such as writing this blog post), reading a chapter in a personal development book, or exercising by playing Dance Dance Revolution for ten minutes. Whatever task I assign to those ten minutes, the outcome is a positive impact on my life.
Where the real magic comes in is that this time adds up in a month.
For example, if I choose to exercise just ten minutes per day, after a month, I would have spent nearly 300 minutes working out, or five hours. Do you think that this would have a positive impact on your life?
You bet.
When you start looking at your life in these little ten minute chunks, it becomes a lot easier to change your life, one step at a time.
I encourage you to try it out and see how your can change your life for the better just ten minutes at a time. Feel free to comment below and let me know how you make out.

Ten minutes. I think I can do that. I just really struggle with all of my classes, holding down a job and volunteering at the local soup kitchen once per week.
I really love your idea of breaking things up into chunks and handling one thing at a time. I am going to try it and see if I can make changes in my own life.
Thanks you so much for the inspiration 🙂
I’ve really struggled these last couple of years trying to make some changes in my life. I’m going to try your suggestions of taking ten minutes at a time and see if I can make some changes – if I keep going the way I have been, my life is not going to end up being much of anything.
